The delusional culmination of this process was orchestrated by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, who, by diluting God into a supposed "Absolute Spirit" that evolves historically in human dialectics, crowned the State and immanent history as the only real gods. From this Hegelian seed sprang the horrors of Marxism, communism, collectivist tyrannies and theological modernism (the "synthesis of all heresies" bravely condemned by Saint Pius X). Modernism, precisely, is the intrusion of philosophical immanentism into religion, reducing objective Divine Revelation to a simple "inner experience" or "vital feeling" of the believer, thereby destroying the historical and transcendent character of faith and dogmas.
In front of this cage of immanentist despair, where man is a solitary orphan who only dialogues with the ghosts of his own conscience, Classical Realism stands majestically, perfected at the summit of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy.
Realism is, fundamentally, the profound humility of intelligence in the face of the amazement of Being. Classical realism affirms that external things exist independently of whether we think about them or not. The tree, the mountain, the neighbor and the universe have an objective existence and an intrinsic nature, created and sustained by a Transcendent Being. Human knowledge does not "construct" reality, but rather "discovers" it. The intelligence of man, by its own spiritual nature, has the wonderful capacity to open itself to the cosmos, assimilate its essence and rise from the visible effects to the First and Invisible Cause.
The classic definition of Truth in Thomistic realism is "adaequatio rei et intellectus", that is, the adequacy or conformity of our mind with the objective reality of things. The truth is not an invention of social consensus, nor a product of our subjective emotions, nor an immanent structure of the State. Truth is the rigorous recognition of what IS. This is the basis of all true science, of all objective morality (the Natural Law that inscribes in the human heart what is intrinsically good and bad) and of all right and just society.
While immanentism plunges us into a swamp of existential pessimism - because if everything ends in matter and in the individual, human life heads inexorably towards nothingness and definitive death -, Classical Realism breaks the mirrors of the modern labyrinth and gives us back the horizon. It teaches us that the human mind, although small, is teleologically designed to touch the infinite. The entire objective universe is a book written by an infinite Intelligence, and we possess the glorious dignity of being able to read its letters and understand the message of its Transcendent Author.
