The Illusion of the Mental Algorithm: The Psychological Crisis and the Transcendental Emptying of Youth

The Lancet Psychiatry Commission (2024)

Of The Lancet Psychiatry Commission (2024)

A comprehensive meta-analysis from The Lancet Psychiatry documents an unprecedented collapse in youth mental health globally. The study empirically demonstrates that hyper-digitization, the dissolution of real community ties, and constant exposure to immanent validation metrics have triggered a state of massive psychological entropy. This epidemiological crisis of hopelessness forcefully dismantles the reductionist worldview that postulates the human mind as a mere neurochemical stimulus-response algorithm. The observed clinical devastation reveals that the human brain, when deprived of its teleological social environment and transcendental purposes, suffers measurable physiological and cognitive deterioration.

Editorial rereading

The heartbreaking epidemiological report published by The Lancet Psychiatry on the collapse of mental health in new generations is not, as secular sociology tries to sell us, a simple "failure to adapt" to new digital ecosystems. It constitutes, on the contrary, the empirical, clinical and statistical demonstration of the monumental failure of the materialist anthropology that has dominated the West in the last century. We have been indoctrinated under the false mechanistic premise that the human person is little more than a higher animal, a biochemical machinery that can be conditioned, rewired, and satisfied through the constant injection of digital dopamine and material consumption. However, the clinical reality is stark. Man is not a "meat algorithm." Its intrinsic design cries out for meaning, purpose, truth and genuine love, immaterial realities that no artificial neural network or hyperconnected device can provide. The current pandemic of anguish and existential emptiness is the natural entropy that occurs when we amputate the spiritual dimension (the Aristotelian final cause) of human development. By locking the person in the tyranny of screens and in the illusion of technological progress without a moral north, modern civilization is forcing human biology to operate against its own natural order. The human brain resists and collapses in the face of this mechanistic aggression. Faced with the reductionism that tries to cure this crisis only with anxiolytics (treating sadness as a mere chemical imbalance), we must oppose the rigorous hylemorphic understanding of the living being: the body and the intellect are a substantial unity removed from chaos. The true psychiatry of the future must, if it wishes to be authentically scientific, recognize the limits of materialism and kneel again before the unfathomable mystery of the person, restoring the sacred dignity that modernity tried to erase by dint of bytes and solitude.
