Meyer's monumental work represents, from the perspective of strict analytical rationality, a ballistic missile aimed at the same waterline of the untouchable dogma that sustains modern biology: mechanistic and blind Darwinism. What Charles Darwin himself recognized with a certain intellectual honesty as a minor anomaly in his original treatise, today has been revealed as an absolutely unbridgeable explanatory abyss thanks to the formidable advances of contemporary paleontology. The "Cambrian Explosion" is not a mere blip in the fossil record, but conclusive proof that the biosphere does not evolve following the pattern of a gradual tree of slow, continuous and imperceptible modifications. On the contrary, life bursts into existence with highly sophisticated and fully assembled architectural plans, completely defying the immanentist postulate of evolutionary slowness. The unquestionable triumph of this analysis lies in its foundation on Information Theory. For a new animal phylum to see the light of biological existence, the coordination of dozens of completely unprecedented cell types is required. These cell types inevitably require the production of new protein machineries, which, in turn, depend on the writing of genetic code sequences (DNA) equivalent to gigabytes of perfectly sequenced information. Empirical science, as well as elementary statistical mathematics, dictate to us with geometric severity that processes left to chance never produce functional software code. To claim, as today's academic bureaucracy does, that purposeless genetic mutations wrote the foundations of the code of life is as logically incoherent as arguing that an earthquake, destroying a printing press, randomly produced the complete volumes of a British encyclopedia. From our editorial line, founded on classical Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics, we consider it imperative to rescue the notion of deep causality that Enlightenment has tried to proscribe. The biological evidence, read without the ideological glasses of secular reductionism, overwhelmingly calls for the existence of a Logos. It requires us to recognize a primordial ordering Intelligence that infuses the act into formless matter. This inference is not a covert theological resource, but the strict application of the empirical method: we know that all complex information, in any branch of human knowledge, is always the byproduct of a conscious mind. Denying it in biology is an act of intellectual contortion. The hegemony of the neo-Darwinian story is not sustained by the strength of its evidence, but by its utilitarian convenience to validate a sociological model of moral relativity. If the human being is only the final accident of random chemical mutations, his intrinsic dignity ("man as treasure") is reduced to the condition of a mere atomic agglomerate, thus justifying ethical atrocities, the culture of death and the whims of anthropological relativism (such as transhumanism). However, when hard science (such as Meyer expounds) forces modernity to admit the pre-existing design of species, the very foundations of materialism crumble. By exposing the severe structural deficiencies of blind evolutionism, modern biology invites us to recover our primordial vocation: to be amazed at a universe that exhibits the undeniable seal of an absolute Reason, ratifying what right philosophy has always proclaimed as the Natural Order.
